72002 MAY/7/1972 - MAY/24/1972 ATLANTIC TWIN John Schlee,Robert Oldale The Commonwealth of Massachusetts faces a critical problem regarding its sand and gravel reserves. These materials essential in highway construction and almost every aspect of commercial and private development are in extremely short supply. Principal sources currently found in New Hampshire are now limited due to depletion and land-use ordinances. WIth rapidly growing demand and increasingly restricted supply of the ingredient essential to the well-being of its people, the Commonwealth has been forced to look towards sea-bed aggregates for future needs. Since mining of marine sediments may have harmful effects on the marine ecological balance and result in damage to beach property, a moratorium has been placed on all commercial dredging in Commonwealth waters. Assessment of ecological damage is underway. This survey was undertaken to establish if exploitable aggregate resources exist in Massachusetts waters. A reconnaissance survey of the area from Cape Ann to Brant Rock between the 40 and 150 foot contours was planned to ascertain the general geologic conditions. From this reconnaissance, detailed survey and physical sampling operations were planned to delineate potential areas of economic aggregate deposits.

75011 JUN/19/1975 - JUN/30/1975 ASTERIAS Charles J. O Hara The cooperative program is designed to provide detailed geological information and an assessment of mineral resources pertaining to that part of the continental shelf beneath the coastal waters of Massachusetts. In anticipation of the development of offshore natural resources of the Commonwealth, the major focus of the research effort is directed toward the occurrance, nature and distribution of these deposits as well as establishment of baseline data for evaluation of environmental impact of exploitation. The subbottom profiling surveys provide the foundation for a planned program of vibracoring and bottom sampling of geological features. Laboratory analysis of the vibracore and bottom samples will evaluate the economic importance of the deposits and, coupled with the seismic data, provide information of the geology and geologic history of the area.
75015 AUG/19/1975 - AUG/22/1975 SPAR Brad Butman The cruise objective was to recover a single mooring on the southern slope of Georges Bank and redeploy 2 moorings at the same site.
75019 SEP/12/1975 - SEP/16/1975 ADVANCE II D. W. Folger The cruise was conducted to make direct observations of geologic, bydrologic, and biologic phenomena at three sites located on Georges Bank. At each of the sites a railroad wheel had been set on a previous cruise. A vibracore pipe was also to have been placed on the bottom prior to the submersible cruise; however, due to mechanical problems the pipes were not set until after the submersible cruise was completed. Of primary concern in the area are the magnitude, characteristics, and distribution of ripple marks on the bottom because these result from both oscillatory and uni-directional current motion. In addition, bottom currents were to be measured directly on the bottom during submersible dives, and distribution patterns and habits of benthic and epibethic fauna assessed. Finally, we hiped to retrieve a string of four current meters that had been set close to one of the diving stations.
75020 SEP/16/1975 - SEP/18/1975 HORNBEAM Brad Butman The cruise objective was to deploy one surface mooring (#GBK2), (#102) and one intermediate mooring(#GBK3) in support of research on the low frequency variability of the region for the USGS.

00061 JUL/9/2000 - JUL/9/2000 MARCUS HANNA M. Bothner The cruise objective is to collect sediment cores at 6 long-term monitoring stations within Boston Harbor. The cores will be used to determine the concentrations and inventories of heavy metals. The previous work at these stations has documented a 50% decrease in metal concentraions in surface sediments between 1977 and 1993. This sampling will check conditions just before the sewage outfall is changed from Deer Island (at the mouth of the harbor) to the new location 9 miles offshore.

00004 SEP/26/2000 - SEP/28/2000 MARCUS HANNA Michael Bothner Three day trips were completed. Day 1: Exchange moorings off Boston and Scituate. Day 2: Collected sediment cores with the new Hydraulically Damped corer at stations 2, 3 and 3b(near the benthic chamber deployment site). Deployed and recover oxygen profiler - 2 times at station 3 once at station 2. Recovered one Benthic chamber by SCUBA divers. The second chamber was not found. Day 3: An attempt was made to recover the lost slow corer from location east of Stellwagen Bank at 200 m water depth. A three grapling hook assembly (on an 8 foot spreader) was used with a camera attached to the middle hook. Dann Blackwood arranged 6 submersible flashlights on the central hook which did a good job illuminating to the side and bottom. The whole assemblage was lowered on half inch tenex rope (breaking strength about 11,000lbs). Approximately 2 hours were spend on and around the last known position of the core. It was not seen in the camera, nor was it hooked during the dragging operation.
