This survey was undertaken to establish if exploitable aggregate resources exist in Massachusetts waters. A reconnaissance survey of the area from Cape Ann to Brant Rock between the 40 and 150 foot contours was conducted using subbottom profiling and sidescan sonar to ascertain the general geologic conditions. Following the reconnaissance survey, a detailed survey and physical sampling operations were conducted to delineate potential areas of economic aggregate deposits using acoustical methods, grab sampling, and bottom photography. |

The cooperative program is designed to provide detailed geological information and an assessment of mineral resources pertaining to that part of the continental shelf beneath the coastal waters of Massachusetts. In anticipation of the development of offshore natural resources of the Commonwealth, the major focus of the research effort is directed toward the occurrance, nature and distribution of these deposits as well as establishment of baseline data for evaluation of environmental impact of exploitation. The subbottom profiling surveys provide the foundation for a planned program of vibracoring and bottom sampling of geological features. Laboratory analysis of the vibracore and bottom samples will evaluate the economic importance of the deposits and, coupled with the seismic data, provide information on the geology and geologic history of the area. |

Conduct a high-resolution subbottom seismic profiling survey in Massachusetts coastal waters south of Cape Cod in Vineyard Sound and Nantucket Sound. In addition, at the request of the New England Division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, a Uniboom seismic site survey is to be conducted in Eastern Rhode Island Sound over the proposed Browns Ledge Dredge Spoil Dump Site and contiguous areas. Principle objectives include: detailed mapping of geological features, assessment of potential mineral resources, feasibility and enviromental impact studies related to offshore mining of sand and gravel, and enviromental considerations relative to offshore disposal of solid waste material. |

GLOMAR CONCEPTION |
John C. Hathaway, John S. Schlee |
The U.S. Geological Survey Atlantic Margin Coring Project, 1976, a 60-day expedition to obtain core samples by drilling beneath the floor of the Continental Shelf and Slope of the eastern United States, was carried out in July, August and September 1976. The purpose of the program was to obtain reliable data for appraisals of environmental conditions and offshore resources. Objectives included measuring geotechnical and engineering properties of the shelf sediments, defining freshwater aquifers offshore, collecting information on possible resources such as phosphates, sand and gravel deposits, and calibrating existing geophysical data. Additional information was sought on the regional extent of geologic units, the stratigraphic column, characteristics and ages of the sediments, variance of the geochemical baseline, and zones of slope stability or potential instability. The work was carried out aboard D/V GLOMAR CONCEPTION with the assistance of the M/V LOLONNOIS in making seismic site surveys, anchoring the drilling vessel, and transporting supplies and equipment. |

The vibracore sampling program is intended to determine the nature of the bottom sediments and shallow substrate of the inner shelf. The core data will be correlated with subbottom seismic profiling data to determine the distribution, lithology and economic importance of offshore geologic features and mineral resources. In addition, these studies will document important landmark data, help to evaluate the feasibility and environmental conditions of offshore mining of mineral deposits and offshore disposal of solid waste material, and provide information on the geology and geologic history of the region. |

As part of the proposed Federal Harbor improvement and maintenance dredging of Fall River and Mt. Hope Bay, a dump site for the dredge spoils is proposed for an area 2 miles southeast of Browns Ledge in Eastern Rhode Island Sound. This site is also being considered as a regional disposal ground for state and private organizations performing dredging for the Corps. The USGS in cooperation with the New England Division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will conduct a sidescan sonar survey as part of a continuing program to determine the suitability and potential environmental impact of ocean dumping of dredge spoil material at the site. Available ship time will also permit acquisition of sonograph data of the sea floor beneath Vineyard Sound to study a massive beach and shoal complex underlaying most of the sound and to identify possible sites for bottom grab sampling and coring. |

The cruise objective is to collect sediment cores at 6 long-term monitoring stations within Boston Harbor. The cores will be used to determine the concentrations and inventories of heavy metals. The previous work at these stations has documented a 50% decrease in metal concentrations in surface sediments between 1977 and 1993. This sampling will check conditions just before the sewage outfall is changed from Deer Island (at the mouth of the harbor) to the new location 9 miles offshore. |

Three day trips were completed. Day 1: Exchanged moorings off Boston and Scituate. Day 2: Collected sediment cores with the new hydraulically damped corer at Stations 2, 3 and 3b (near the benthic chamber deployment site). Deployed and recovered oxygen profiler - 2 times at Station 3 and once at Station 2. Recovered one benthic chamber by SCUBA divers. The second chamber was not found. Day 3: An attempt was made to recover the lost slow corer from location east of Stellwagen Bank at 200 m water depth. A three grapling hook assembly (on an 8-foot spreader) was used with a camera attached to the middle hook. Dann Blackwood arranged 6 submersible flashlights on the central hook which did a good job illuminating to the side and bottom. The whole assemblage was lowered on half-inch tenex rope (breaking strength about 11,000 lbs). Approximately 2 hours were spent on and around the last known position of the core. It was not seen in the camera, nor was it hooked during the dragging operation. |

Collect short cores for Metal Flux Study in order to test gel probes against the centrifuge pore water extraction method. Samples were collected around the long-term Station 8 in the Boston Harbor study. Target position: 42deg, 17 min, 28.688 sec N, 070 deg, 55 min, 48.507 sec W. This location is west of the typical Station 8 in order to avoid a concentrated mat of Ampilisca (amphipod) tubes. These tubes make it diffcult to cut the core for pore water studies. |
