1990-016-FA 1990-07-10 - 1990-07-11 WHITE HEATH Mike Bothner
The objective of the program is to make long-term measurements of currents and sediment transport in the vicinity of the proposed ocean outfall in Massachusetts Bay. The purpose of this cruise was to recover and redeploy the instrumented moorings. Samples of bottom sediments are collected on each cruise required to service the instruments. This was the third in a series of 6 cruises during the two year period of the present Joint Funding Agreement between the MA Water Resources Authority and the USGS.

To deploy an instrumented tripod, a subsurface mooring, and a near surface current meter from the Coast Guard's large navigation buoy at the approach to Boston Harbor. In addition, sediment samples will be collected with a Van Veen grab sampler at two locations near the proposed offshore outfall for Boston's sewage treatment plant. Objective is to begin long-term monitoring of currents, sediment transport, and physical/chemical characteristics of sediments in western Massachusetts Bay.

The primary objective for this cruise is to acquire the first complete sidescan sonar coverage of an 81 square kilometer area that includes the proposed outfall site. Other objectives were to collect high-resolution seismic reflection and bathymetric data throughout the survey area and to collect sediment samples and take photographs and video of the sea floor at specific targets, identified using the sidescan results.

Identify and map the geology and shallow structure of Massachusetts Bay. Assess potential mineral resources, principally sand and gravel. Evaluate feasibility and environmental impact of offshore mining of mineral deposits and offshore disposal of solid waste material. Evaluate potential containment and/or dispersal sites for offshore dumping of harbor dredge-spoil material. Evaluate potential geologic hazards that may impact proposed petroleum pipe line corridors from offshore wells to processing facilities onshore. Determine the geologic framework and Quaternary development of this part of the Atlantic Inner Continental Shelf. Select sites for possible coring in summer 1980. Augment similar data obtained in the Massachusetts Bay inshore area by Raytheon Co. (May 1972, PHIPPS, FA 72001) and further offshore by this office (June 1979, GILLISS Leg 2, FA 79012).
