Summary for Field Activity Number 1976-041-FA

Alternate Leg ID: FAY 026

Area of Operations: South Atlantic Continental Shelf, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, United States, North America, North Atlantic

Dates: October 16, 1976 to October 25, 1976

Objectives: Obtain 10 vibracores each in both the northern and southern areas of high leasing interest. Emplace 3 reference pipes with buoys and pingers. Obtain 10 hydrostatically damped gravity cores, 5 in each area of interest. Run 3 sidescan sonar lines 20 miles long, 700 m apart in each area.

Type of Activity: Sampling
Sea floor mapping

Information to be derived: Samples and chemical analysis
Grain size analysis
Sea floor map
Morphology

Summary: All cruise objectives were attained. The only major shortcoming was the inability to maintain planned sonar transects when in the Gulf Stream. Vibracores were curated at Skidaway. Hydrostatically damped cores were curated at USGS-Woods Hole. Sidescan sonar data was curated at Georgia U. Vibracores: 18 cores, 2 to 19 feet long, 3 with rock in base, 7 interpreted as bottoming out in rock substrate; custodian = Skidaway. Grab sample: 1; custodian = Skidaway. Hydro-damped cores: 16 cores, 3 to 12.75 in. long; custodian = Mike Bothner, USGS-Woods Hole. Sidescan sonar: 108 km; custodian = Georgia U.
