Summary for Field Activity Number 1977-037-FA

Alternate Leg ID: 77-09

Area of Operations: Isla de Vieques, Puerto Rico, United States, Caribbean Sea, North America, Noth Atlantic

Dates: November 07, 1977 to November 16, 1977

Objectives: Investigate sand waves on pipeline route, Escollo de Arenas, northwest of Isla de Vieques, Puerto Rico. Map and measure sand waves; sample; set stakes to detect motion/sediment transport; photograph and observe sand waves by SCUBA; measure tide heights; and sample water on different tides to measure suspended sediment.

Type of Activity: Sea floor mapping
Photography

Information to be derived: Grain size analysis
Suspended sediment concentrations

Summary: Profiled, described and sampled shifting sand shoal, particularly 4 sand waves in central part, on pipeline route. Determined coarse sand is in oscillatory motion on each semi-diurnal tidal current; secondary 2-m waves are in motion. Sampled water on excurrent and incurrent tides for suspended sediment. Recorded rise and fall of tides. Ship days: 5; Man days: 25.
