Area of Operations: South Atlantic Bight, South Carolina, United States, North America, North Atlantic
Dates: December 13, 1978 to December 13, 1978
Chief scientist: Brad Butman
Objectives: Recover bottom tripod system (mooring #153). The instrument package had not been recovered as planned on an earlier cruise due to failure in recovery system. (An unsuccessful attempt to recover by grappling was made on a University of Miami cruise, FA 78039 Nov. 14-17, 1978, aboard the COLUMBUS ISELIN CI7808.) We planned to recover by grappling. USGS personnel were onboard this cruise for the recovery only and did not transit with the vessel.
Type of Activity: Mooring work
Information to be derived: Time series data
Summary: Mooring recovered: 1 (#153, deployed FA 78018 WHITEFOOT Jul. 13-14, 1978). The tripod system was generally free of biological growth. The penetrators in the camera, strobe and battery had severely corroded and the entire system flooded. The film was not entirely wet however and has been sent for processing.
