Area of Operations: Texas-Louisiana continental slope, Gulf of Mexico, United States, North America, North Atlantic
Dates: May 18, 1980 to June 01, 1980
Objectives: Collect data from 3 types of intraslope basins related to salt diapirism: Type I (Gyre Basin) = submarine canyon blocked by active diapirs; Type II (Orca Basin) = interdomal basin formed by upward moving diapirs leaving central area in near original depth; and Type III (Carancahua) = collapse basin caused by either extension of sediment or salt solution from top of diapir. The plan was to study in detail each type of basin using seismic reflection, core/sample gear, bottom camera, CTD, and water bottles.
Type of Activity:
Information to be derived:
Summary: 125 seismic lines: 2301 km 3.5 kHz records, 1438 km minisparker records, 1005 km airgun records; Cores: 5 box cores, 1 gravity core.
