Summary for Field Activity Number 1987-019-FA

Alternate Leg ID: S3-87-CI

Area of Operations: Canary Islands, Africa, North Atlantic

Dates: May 12, 1987 to June 11, 1987

Objectives: Collect gravity and bathymetry data around the Canary Islands on a 3 nm grid with internal consistency of +/-3 mgals, while tying GE 810 correlation sonar into the Magnavox 5000 integrated navigation system and the USGS data collection system.

Type of Activity:

Information to be derived:

Summary: The ship left Las Palmas, Gran Canaria Island, May 12, 1987, heading for Fuerteventura. Starting on the southern coast working east and north toward Lanzarote Island, we surveyed around Lanzarote then exchanged some crew members in Las Palmas. We ran one long line southwest along the west coast of Fuerteventura on the transit to Las Palmas, making the party exchange on May 18. Racal had a limited number of navigation stations and each station had limited range (15-20 nmi for Microfix, 150 nmi for Hyperfix), therefore the sea survey had to be coordinated with land resources. While data are normally processed every few days, the data were processed before leaving the area to eliminate the need to return and to all the Racal navigation stations to be moved to the next area. On May 23rd, the east side of Gran Canaria Island was surveyed and scientific party was exchanged at Las Palmas. The survey then continued around Gran Canaria and the western islands of Tenerife, Gomera, Hierro, and La Palma. The cruise ended in Las Palmas on June 11, 1987, where the gravity data was referenced to the gravity station in Las Palmas.
